Review from Biofuels East Event

BIOFUELS EAST 2010 CONFERENCE

With well in excess of 100 delegates attending and first-class speakers presenting,                      the Biofuels East 2010 Conference, hosted in Cambridge on 17th March, offered a timely perspective on the contribution that the UK can make to the development of low carbon biofuels.

Bianca Forte and Richard Parker

The global biofuels industry is expanding and diversifying in response to the need to address issues of climate change and energy security. Richard Parker, BioEnergy Development Director at Renewables East, opened the Biofuels East 2010 Conference urging stakeholders to consider the economic opportunities available for UK Plc in the biofuels sector.

Biogas Handbook

One of the main environmental problems of today's society is the continuously increasingproduction of organic wastes. In many countries, sustainable waste management as well as waste prevention and reduction have become major political priorities, representing an important share of the common efforts to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and

to mitigate global climate changes. Uncontrolled waste dumping is no longer acceptable

today and even controlled landfill disposal and incineration of organic wastes are not

considered optimal practices, as environmental standards hereof are increasingly stricter and

energy recovery and recycling of nutrients and organic matter is aimed.

Quality outputs from anaerobic digestion of source-segregrated biodegradable waste approved release by WRAP

The draft Quality Protocol for the production and use of quality outputs from anaerobic digestion of source-segregated biodegradable waste has now been approved for release by WRAP, the Environment Agency and Defra and is available to download at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/topics/waste/39005.aspx

Before publication as a final document, the draft Quality Protocol must be notified before the European Commission's Technical Standards committee, in accordance with the Technical Standards and Regulations Directive 98/34/EC. This may take up to six months.

During this period, the Environment Agency will continue to regulate the production and use of quality outputs from anaerobic digestion of source-segregated biodegradable waste in accordance with the interim regulatory position statement available at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Business/mwrp_017_2077226.pdf.
