BIOFUELS EAST 2010 CONFERENCE
17 March 2010

Assess the political landscape in the UK, examine opportunities and challenges in advanced biofuels

and connect with potential partners for collaborative projects

Every year nearly 50 billion litres of road fuels are consumed in the UK, with resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that account for around one fifth of the UK's total annual emissions. In the year 2008/09, 2.7% of the total road transport fuel supply was biofuel. The fuels supplied under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) delivered a 46% carbon saving compared to the equivalent fossil fuels; a reduction of 1.6 million tonnes of CO2e in GHG emissions.

Biofuels from crops grown overseas made up at least 64% of the total biofuels supplied under the RTFO in 2008/09. Only 4% of the biofuels from feedstocks cultivated outside the UK met the required sustainability standards and a few suppliers sourced biofuels with higher GHG emissions than the fossil fuels they replaced. There is currently no legal penalty for failing to meet sustainability standards or GHG emissions savings under the RTFO.

Waste and residues have gained considerable attention as preferred feedstocks for biofuel production in a number of countries. However, in some cases displacement from current market use could result in increased GHG emissions. The indirect effects of displacing these feedstocks from existing market use are not within the boundaries of the carbon methodology of the RTFO.

Key questions related to current and advanced biofuels must be addressed in the move towards sustainable production. The Biofuels East 2010 Conference will bring together policy makers, industry representatives and first-class academic experts to discuss the role that biofuels have to play in a low carbon transport sector and examine challenges and opportunities in advanced biofuels.
